Patent Benchmark IndexTM
Metrics’ Patent Benchmark Index™ (PBI) reports provide a way to
easily score a large patent portfolio
against other portfolios of the same
age and technology classification category.
Using citations as an indicator of patent value, the Patent Benchmark IndexTM provides scores and percentile rankings for individual patents in a company's portfolio.
PBI pricing starts at $100 for companies with small portfolios
(defined as companies with fewer than 100 U.S. patents). Pricing is higher
for companies with larger number of patents – contact Customer
Service for a custom quote.
Patent Benchmark IndexTM reports can be used to: For each patent in a PBI report, the patent number, issue year, main U.S. Class assigned to the patent, the number of citations per year to the patent, total citations to the patent, the average number of cites received by all patents in that patent's class and issued in that patent's year, the PBI score (patents total cites/average cites per patent for patents issued in that class and year) and the percentile rank for that patent are listed. The percentile rank is where the patent falls in terms of total citations relative to all patents issued in that class in that year.
The figure below shows PBI scores for the patents held by Nanogram,
a nanotechnology company based in Fremont, California. Using the fourth
patent in the figure as an example, Patent 6080337 was issued in 2000
in US Class 252. It has been cited 3 times. For all patents issued in
2000 in Class 252 the average number of cites per patent is .77. Dividing
3 by .77 gives a PBI score of 3.89 (rounded) for this patent, thus this
patent has been cited about 3.89 times more often then the average patent
that issued in 2000 in Class 252. This patent ranks in the 92nd percentile
in terms of citations received among patents issuing in 2000 in Class
252. Patent Benchmark IndexTM Report: Nanogram
